Artist Statement
Working within the space of drawing as a form of painting I find my process of work is not a calm release of creativity but something more akin to torture, a required but painful process. Exploring themes of Self-deprecation, Existentialism, Depression, Isolation, Pattern and line, Introspection, identity and dark humour my work focuses on creating pieces of work which evoke a reaction from my viewers and attempt to show them a semblance of something honest, something vulnerable.
Taking great influence from the comics I aim to cultivate the unique connection available within them, utilizing the disconnection from reality that comes from the movement to a more iconic-esque drawing philosophy which forms, what I call, disconnected connection, dissolving the distance between audience and creator. It is through this dissolution I hope to upset the hierarchy apparent within contemporary gallery environments and lead to the audience stepping closer to the work behind the work.
